In constructing a house or a building, a siding is what covers its exterior. There are several materials used in constructions like metal, wood, vinyl, masonry, or composite materials.
A popular siding used during the early 1900’s was the Cement Asbestos Siding. It was in 1879 when the U.S. Started using asbestos for building structures. It was the ideal material because it’s organic, strong, and even heat resistant.
The Cement Asbestos Siding was banned though in 1980’s due to dangers caused by the asbestos material. It was linked to several respiratory problems like lung cancer, asbestosis and mesothelioma. It was said that breathing asbestos fibers may increase your risk or may put you to risk in developing such diseases. However, it may only happen if the asbestos is sanded or pulverized, allowing you to accidentally breathe in the material. Otherwise, leaving the material untouched should not cause any harm.
Since the banning of asbestos, Fiber Cement Siding has been the replacement for constructions. It is mainly composed of cement, sand, fly ash, and cellulose fibers. The nice thing about this type of siding is that it looks like wood. So if you want the look of wood siding materials, it is advisable to just go with Fiber Cement. Why? Fiber cement is a low maintenance material, it does not rot nor distort, it resists termite and fire or heat, and it can be painted. And not to forget, it also holds the paint longer.
Fiber Cement can be pretty heavy though and must be handled carefully when installing. It may chip or break if mishandled. Because of this, it may be quite difficult for a DIY installation, so it’s best if you hire a professional instead. Fiber Cement may be costly especially with the installation fees included, but it may be really beneficial in the long run.
